Without a car, the practical way to see the west side of Lewis is a guided day tour from Stornoway: in four to six hours a local driver-guide can link the Calanais stones, Dun Carloway broch, a blackhouse village and, on some tours, the Butt of Lewis. In town, the Harris Tweed Story Room gives a short, inexpensive introduction to the cloth.
From the mainland, multi-day small-group tours from Inverness (three days) or Edinburgh (five to six days, usually with Skye) include the ferry crossings and a guide who knows the single-track roads — a good option if you would rather not arrange cars and sailings yourself.
