Glasgow: When to Go

Glasgow by season: when the festivals fall, when the weather is kindest and when rooms are cheapest.

Glasgow is an indoor city as much as an outdoor one — museums, music and restaurants do not depend on the weather — so it works at any time of year. It is wetter than the east coast, with mild winters and cool summers.

Season by season

Spring (March–May)

Parks and the Botanic Gardens come into flower and the evenings stretch out. May is usually the driest month and a good time to combine the city with Loch Lomond.

Summer (June–August)

Long light evenings, beer gardens and the TRNSMT music festival on Glasgow Green in July. Warm rather than hot; showers are never far away.

Autumn (September–November)

Kelvingrove Park and Pollok Park turn gold, the cultural season restarts and hotel prices ease. Rainfall increases through October and November.

Winter (December–February)

Dark by 4 pm in December but lively: Christmas markets, then Celtic Connections fills the city’s venues with folk and roots music for more than two weeks from mid-January.

Crowds & booking ahead

Glasgow never feels overrun in the way Edinburgh does in August. The pinch points are big concert nights at the Hydro and Hampden, major football matches and international conferences, when hotels across the city fill and prices rise sharply. Outside those dates rooms are easy to find, and weekends in January, February and November are especially good value.
