St Andrews & Fife: When to Go

When to go to St Andrews and Fife: one of the sunniest corners of Scotland, with a calendar shaped by golf and the university.

Fife lies in the rain shadow of the Highlands and enjoys more sunshine and less rain than almost anywhere in Scotland. Sea breezes keep summers cool. The town’s rhythm follows the university terms and the golf season.

Season by season

Spring (March–May)

Bright, breezy days, blossom in the college gardens and seabirds returning to the Isle of May from April. Students are in residence, so the town is lively without being crowded.

Summer (June–August)

The warmest weather, the busiest links and long light evenings on West Sands. Students leave after graduation in late June and golfers and holidaymakers replace them. Occasional sea fog.

Autumn (September–November)

A lovely, settled time on the east coast. The students return in September, and the Dunhill Links tournament brings professional golf and celebrities in early October.

Winter (December–February)

Cold, clear and quiet. The courses stay open (often with mats), hotel prices drop and the beaches are empty. Some East Neuk attractions and Falkland Palace close.

Crowds & booking ahead

St Andrews is busiest from June to early September. The pressure points are different from the rest of Scotland: university graduations, the Dunhill Links in October and, above all, the years when The Open Championship is held on the Old Course (next scheduled for July 2027), when the whole of Fife books out a year or more ahead. Outside those dates it is rarely hard to find a room, and winter weekends are a bargain.
