St Andrews is easy to explore unaided, but a guided walk earns its fee: the town’s stories — martyrs burned in the street, student traditions, royal romances — are not written on the walls. Golfers and non-golfers alike enjoy the Old Course history tours, which take you on to the first and eighteenth fairways and explain why the course is the shape it is.
From Edinburgh, day tours to St Andrews and the East Neuk are the simplest way to see the fishing villages without a car, since public transport between them is slow. They usually stop at the Forth Bridges viewpoint and one or two harbours and allow two to three hours in St Andrews.
