This is the most continental corner of Britain: colder in winter and often sunnier and drier in summer than the west coast. It is a year-round destination, with skiing when there is snow and distilleries open in most months.
Season by season
Spring (March–May)
Snow lingers on the plateau while the glens green up. Ospreys return to Loch Garten in April, the Spirit of Speyside festival runs around the start of May, and Balmoral’s grounds usually open.
Summer (June–August)
The best time for walking, cycling and watersports, with long days and relatively few midges. Some distilleries stop production for their summer maintenance break, though visitor centres generally stay open. Balmoral closes to visitors in early August.
Autumn (September–November)
The Braemar Gathering opens September; then birch and larch turn gold, red deer rut on the hills and distilleries are back in full production. One of the loveliest seasons here.
Winter (December–February)
Proper winter: snow on the mountains, frozen lochs, skiing and snowboarding at Cairngorm, the Lecht and Glenshee when conditions allow, and firesides in the whisky bars. Some attractions close and high roads may be blocked.

Crowds & booking ahead
Aviemore is busiest in the school summer holidays and, when there is snow, at February half-term and winter weekends. Speyside is rarely crowded except during the whisky festival, when accommodation in the villages is booked a year ahead. On Deeside, Braemar and Ballater fill for the Gathering and are busy whenever Balmoral is open. Outside those times the whole region is pleasantly quiet, and November and March are particularly good value.
