Loch Ness & Inverness: When to Go

When to go to Loch Ness and Inverness: drier than the west coast, lively in summer and atmospheric — and good value — off season.

Inverness lies on the sheltered east side of the Highlands and is noticeably drier than Fort William or Skye. Its sights are open all year, which makes it a good base in any season.

Season by season

Spring (March–May)

Gorse blazes yellow along the loch, the cruise boats step up to their summer timetables and the Culloden anniversary is marked in mid-April. May has long days and few crowds.

Summer (June–August)

Peak season: light until nearly 11 pm in June, every tour running, Highland games in July — and coaches nose to tail at Urquhart Castle. Book rooms and popular day tours well ahead.

Autumn (September–November)

Birch and rowan colour the loch sides, the air sharpens and the crowds fall away. Late September and October are ideal for Glen Affric.

Winter (December–February)

Short days and mist on the water suit the loch’s mood. Cruises run on a reduced timetable, some rural places close, and hotel rates are at their lowest. The northern lights are occasionally seen over the Moray Firth.

Crowds & booking ahead

The A82 side of the loch and Urquhart Castle carry the bulk of Scotland’s coach-tour traffic from May to September, peaking around the middle of the day. Inverness itself fills in July and August, when a room for one night can be hard to find at short notice — it is the starting gate of the North Coast 500 as well as the hub for Loch Ness. Visit in May, early June or September, or head for the quiet south shore, and the loch feels very different.
