Isle of Skye Tours & Tickets

Day tours to Skye from Inverness, three-day tours from Edinburgh and Glasgow, private driver-guides on the island and boat trips into the Cuillin.

Skye is the one place in Scotland where a guided tour is often the better choice, not just the easier one. The roads are single-track, the car parks overflow and the driver sees little but the passing places. There are three ways to do it. From Inverness, a twelve-hour day tour covers Eilean Donan Castle, Portree and the Trotternish viewpoints. From Edinburgh or Glasgow, choose a three-day tour — two nights away, usually with a full day on the island and Glencoe and Loch Ness on the way.

If you are already on Skye, private driver-guides based on the island can time the Storr and the Quiraing around the crowds, and boat trips from Elgol sail into Loch Coruisk in the heart of the Cuillin. See also tours from Inverness and Glencoe and Glenfinnan.

A note on what you can book

GetYourGuide has dozens of tours to Skye but comparatively few shared tours that start on the island: most local listings are private tours priced per vehicle. Small-group minibus tours from Portree do exist with local operators and sell out early in summer. Boat trips from Elgol, Portree and Dunvegan are mostly booked directly with the boatmen; one Elgol operator is now listed on GetYourGuide.

Isle of Skye tours: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is a day trip to Skye from Inverness worth it?

If it is your only chance, yes: you will see Eilean Donan, Portree and the coast of Trotternish. But around eight of the twelve hours are spent on the road, and there is rarely time for the walk up to the Storr or to the Fairy Pools. Stay overnight if you can.

Which three-day Skye tour should I choose?

Large-coach tours are cheapest; small-group tours of around 16 people cost more but stop more often and can reach the Quiraing and the Fairy Pools. Check whether accommodation is included or booked separately, and whether you stay on Skye itself.

Can I tour Skye without a car once I am there?

Yes, by joining a local day tour or hiring a driver-guide from Portree. Public buses exist but are too infrequent for sightseeing.
