The Jacobite steam train crossing the curved Glenfinnan Viaduct

Glencoe & Fort William Tours & Tickets

Day tours to Glencoe and Glenfinnan from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness, the Jacobite steam train, and guided hikes and boat trips from Fort William.

This is the destination of Scotland’s classic one-day Highland tours. From Edinburgh or Glasgow they come in two flavours: those that go on from Glencoe to Loch Ness, and those that turn west to Fort William and the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Both are long days — eleven to thirteen hours — and both are far easier than driving it yourself in a day.

Staying locally opens up better things. From Fort William you can take a guided hike up Ben Nevis or to Steall Falls with a qualified leader, a boat trip on Loch Linnhe, or the Jacobite steam train to Mallaig. For trips that continue to Loch Ness or Skye, see Loch Ness tours and Skye tours.

A note on what you can book

GetYourGuide is strong on day tours into the area and has a growing list of local guided hikes. Seats on the Jacobite steam train are sold mainly by its operator, West Coast Railways, and through packaged day tours such as those above; the ordinary ScotRail train on the same line is booked like any other rail ticket.

Glencoe & Fort William tours: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Will I see the steam train cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct?

Only in season (roughly April to October), and only if your timing is right: the Jacobite crosses a couple of times a day, typically late morning and mid-afternoon. Tours try to coincide with it but cannot guarantee it, and services are occasionally cancelled.

Do I need a guide for Ben Nevis?

Fit, experienced hill-walkers manage the Mountain Track without one in summer. If you are new to mountains, unsure about navigation in cloud, or going outside June to September, a guided ascent is a sound investment.

Is the Jacobite steam train worth the price?

For steam enthusiasts and Harry Potter fans, yes. If it is the scenery you want, the regular ScotRail train runs the same route for a fraction of the fare — and you can get off at Glenfinnan.
