Loch Lomond & The Trossachs: When to Go

When to visit Loch Lomond and the Trossachs — and how to dodge the weekend crowds, the midges and the rain.

The park is open and beautiful all year, but it is on the wet western side of Scotland and very close to two million people. Timing matters more here for crowds than for weather.

Season by season

Spring (March–May)

Bluebells carpet Inchcailloch and the east-shore oakwoods in May, the hills are often still snow-capped and the air is clear. Cruises and the waterbus build up from Easter. Usually the driest season.

Summer (June–August)

Warmest water, longest days and everything running — along with full car parks, traffic on the A82 and midges at dusk. Midweek is far calmer than the weekend.

Autumn (September–November)

The Trossachs were made for autumn: oak, birch and larch turn gold around the lochs through October. September is often settled; rain increases later.

Winter (December–February)

Quiet, often misty, sometimes spectacular when snow lies on Ben Lomond. Some cruises still run, but the steamship, waterbus and many cafés close or reduce hours, and daylight is short.

Crowds & booking ahead

Because the loch is the nearest piece of the Highlands to Glasgow, visitor numbers follow the weather forecast. A sunny Saturday or bank holiday between May and September brings queues on the A82 and full car parks by mid-morning at Luss, Balmaha and Rowardennan. Come on a weekday, start early, or head for the quieter Trossachs lochs and Breadalbane. From November to March you will have most of the park to yourself.
